Air Abrasion

What is Air Abrasion?

Dentists have long used the infamous drill to remove decay from a tooth. Air abrasion offers a method for removing this decay without resorting to the drill. In much the same way that a sandblaster will remove graffiti from a cement wall, air abrasion makes use of a powerful stream of air filled with miniature aluminum oxide particles to “sandblast” the decay out of the teeth. Air abrasion is completely safe. We will protect your eyes and nearby teeth and gums that are not being treated. We will suction out the particles that are lifted off your teeth.

When is Air Abrasion Used?

Air abrasion is most often used to prepare teeth for other treatments. This preparatory work can be in anticipation of a multitude of treatments:

  • Composite fillings
  • Bonding treatments
  • Repair of damaged teeth
  • Repair of old dental work
  • Preparation for cosmetic dental procedures
  • Removal of stains and spots
